Karachi Port Trust Handles Record 3.8 Million TEUs of Container Cargo

Reinforcing Karachi’s status as Pakistan’s supreme economic lifeline, the Karachi Port Trust (KPT) alongside the South Asia Pakistan Terminal (SAPT) processed a historic 3.8 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of containerized freight in the preceding financial year.
The maritime milestone represents an 11.4 percent year-on-year surge in vessel turnaround efficiency, facilitated by the commissioning of four mega post-Panamax gantry cranes and the complete digitalization of the Pakistan Single Window (PSW) customs interface.
Port executives highlighted that average ship dwell times decreased by 18 percent, saving national shipping lines millions of dollars in demurrage surcharges and bolstering the delivery cycle of vital industrial raw materials destined for industrial estates across Sindh and Punjab.
Commercial chambers across the city lauded the operational benchmarks, while urging the federal government to accelerate the dedicated freight rail corridor connecting KPT directly to Pipri Dry Port.
